Mystics Were Doing Information Design: A Seven-Hundred-Year Lineage of the Diagram

A node-link graph, a radial dashboard, a correspondence table — we treat these as born with the computer. They're centuries old, and the people who drew them first called it magic.

The maps this desk makes (trust maps, confusion maps, node-link graphs of who-gets-mistaken-for-whom) feel like a very contemporary craft. Force-directed layouts, color-coded evidence states, the whole grammar of the dashboard. It reads as native to the age of data.

It isn’t. The same structures show up, fully formed, in esoteric diagrams going back seven hundred years: the same solution to the same problem, arrived at twice. And once you see that, the graph stops looking like a modern invention and starts looking like a very old human habit that finally got a name.

This is a synthesis piece, so the rule this desk holds to applies: a parallel is only worth drawing if there’s a real shared mechanism underneath, not just two things that happen to look alike. There is one here. Let me name it before I decorate it.

The shared mechanism

An esoteric correspondence system and a data graph are both doing one thing: compressing a high-dimensional web of relationships into a spatial, color-coded surface you can navigate and query.

Take a Renaissance table of correspondences: planet to color to angel to hour to element to metal. Strip the metaphysics and what’s left is a join table, entities related to other entities across several dimensions at once. A mandala is that same data rendered radially, a dashboard where position on a ring is a variable and hue is a category. The Tree of Life is a node-link graph: nodes, edges, a topology you trace. Ramon Llull’s combinatorial wheels, the rotating concentric circles of his Ars (c. 1305), are literally visual calculators, and historians of computing read them as an ancestor of the interactive diagram (Yates, 1966).

The job in every case is the same. A person can’t hold a dozen interlocking relationships in their head. So you put them in space, give each dimension a visual channel, and let the eye do the work the mind can’t. The match is not cosmetic: it’s the same cognitive offload, reached independently because there’s only one perceptual system to design for.

The esotericist mapping correspondences and an analyst mapping trust are doing the same act, seven hundred years apart.

Why the forms recur

Here’s the part that makes it more than a fun observation. The forms recur because human perception is fixed, and only some encodings actually work.

Radial correspondence wheels became radial dendrograms and sunburst charts. Concentric rings became polar and coxcomb charts. Networks like the Tree of Life became node-link graphs. Correspondence grids became heatmaps and matrices. These aren’t stylistic echoes; they’re the same small set of shapes that survive because the eye reads them accurately.

Modern data visualization eventually wrote the theory down. Jacques Bertin, in Sémiologie Graphique (1967), catalogued the visual variables (position, size, shape, value, color, orientation, texture): the channels through which a mark carries data. The mystics had none of that theory. They kept the encodings that worked and dropped the ones that didn’t, over centuries of copying. Look at Georg von Welling’s Opus Mago-Cabbalisticum et Theosophicum (1735), an alchemical treatise dense with elaborate colored figures: read it as a designer and the color isn’t decoration, it’s doing an encoding job, hue standing in for category. That reading is mine, not the record’s; von Welling wasn’t theorizing visual encoding. But the pattern holds across the tradition: systematic color, held stable because it functioned, more than two centuries before Bertin gave it a name.

This has been said — and where mine differs

I’m not the first to notice this, and the honest move is to say so before I go further. Manuel Lima, in Visual Complexity (2011) and The Book of Trees (2014), traces network and tree visualization straight back through medieval and religious diagrams; his history of the tree starts in illuminated monastic manuscripts, centuries before the data. Frances Yates, in The Art of Memory (1966), mapped the memory-arts and brought Llull’s combinatorial wheels into serious scholarship decades ago. Johanna Drucker’s Graphesis (2014) treats the diagram, volvelles included, as a way of making knowledge, not just showing it. The lineage is established scholarship; this piece stands on it, and doesn’t pretend to have found it.

What I’d add is the vantage point. Most people who write about this are historians looking back at the diagrams. I draw the modern end of the same lineage for a living: node-link graphs of trust and confusion for technical projects. So the through-line isn’t academic to me. Llull’s wheel, the Tree of Life, and the confusion map on this site are the same instrument, evolved. The interesting claim isn’t “the occult was data viz.” It’s “the graph I draw has a seven-hundred-year lineage, and knowing that makes me better at drawing it.”

The payoff

The reason this matters for the actual work of trust, perception, and making technical things legible is that it tells you why certain diagrams land and others don’t.

The forms that survived seven centuries survived because they fit perception. When you need to make a complex technical system legible fast (an ecosystem, a set of trust relationships, a tangle of who-gets-confused-for-whom), you’re not free to invent any shape you like. You’re choosing from the small library of encodings the eye actually reads well, the same library the diagram-makers converged on the hard way. Reach for a radial layout when the data is one center and its correspondences. Reach for a node-link graph when it’s a web of relations. Reach for a matrix when everything relates to everything.

Call it neither mysticism nor nostalgia. Good information design has always been about respecting how perception works, and the people we file under “esoteric” were, in the part that mattered, early practitioners of the craft this desk still runs.
